What Are the Different Types of Yoga?

Woman doing yoga

Yoga has evolved over thousands of years, with hundreds of sequences, movements and poses. Yoga can complement every fitness regimen, boosting strength and flexibility while harmonizing body, mind and spirit. There are many different types of yoga for you to practice.

Types of Yoga

The yoga types listed below touch on some of the various styles. They differ in intensity, flow and purpose, ranging from vigorous to passive, relaxing practices.

1. Hatha Yoga

Hatha covers multiple yoga styles. The old yoga system combines postures with breathing exercises to bring peace and help you delve into spiritual practices like meditation.

2. Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is a general term that includes various yoga styles. These styles are more vigorous, incorporating synchronized breathing with fast-flowing sun salutations.

3. Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga is a more modern practice. You will flow nonstop between the series of movements while breathing during the sequence of poses.

4. Power Yoga

This vinyasa-style yoga is physically demanding and vigorous. Power yoga allows the instructor the freedom to explore different postures and sequences.

5. Bikram Yoga

Bikram yoga is a consistent practice, offering 26 poses and two breathing techniques in the same order for 90 minutes.

6. Jivamukti Yoga

Jivamukti yoga starts with a standardized warmup. The teacher will include chanting, meditation, affirmations and weekly themes.

7. Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga hones the subtleties of each posture. You hold each pose longer to focus on the precise musculoskeletal alignment. This style also includes props — belts, chairs, blankets, blocks and bolsters.

8. Anusara Yoga

This new system encourages following your heart and grace. The style prioritizes attitude, action and alignment.

9. Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga repeats movement and exercise with dynamic breathing, chanting and meditation. The practice aims to awaken your energy-base, drawing through the seven chakras.

10. Yin Yoga

This slow-paced yoga incorporates holding poses for at least five minutes. The passive style is still challenging and is exceptional for increasing your flexibility.

11. Restorative Yoga

This relaxing, gentle style helps you release tension and stretch. This type uses props to support your body.
